SANKARDEVA
(1449-1569)
Sankardeva
was born to Kusumbar Bhuyan, in the year 1449, at Bordoa in Nagaon
, Assam, India.
He was a multidimensional personality and gave as much a great
person can to his society so why hw is called the MAHAPURUSH. The 'Satras'
founded by him have helped to popularize and spread Vaishnavism. In
order to spread and popularize the Vaishnavite movements he scripted
songs ('Borgeet') and many dramas , 'Kirton', the religious text,
the 'Namghoxa' and instruments like 'Khol-taal' are unique gifts
from this towering social reformat and saint.
'Patni-Prasad', 'Kalia-Daman', ' Rukmini Haran' are few of his
famous works. His works have given a firm and invaluable foundation
to the Assamese culture and literature as well.
JYOTI
PRASAD AGARWALA (1903-1957)
Rupkowar Jyoti Prasad was a great
dramatist, lyricist and singer. 'Sonit Kowari', 'Karenger
Ligiri' are two of his great dramas. A few of his patriotic poems
are 'Konaklata', 'Assamiya Lorar Ukti'. He had also written
Ramayana, in accordance to the taste and rhythm of the children .
The first Assamese film "Joymoti"
is his creation.
His melodious songs have made him immortal in the minds of his the
Assamese as Jyoti Sangeet.
BISHNU
RABHA (1909-1969)
Bishnu Prasad Rabha
who is better known as 'Kola Guru' was a poet, dramatist, lyricist,
singer, litterateur, danseuse and expert actor. He was also a
revolutionary who was put behind the bars, due to his love for his
motherland. He had a deep association with the theatrical troupes.
Beside 'Rabha- Sangeet' his unique creation, he had written valuable
books like the histories of the Rabhas, the Dimasas and Boros.
His revolutionary spirit rings clear in his 'Rabha-Sangeet' and
keeps him alive even today.
AZAN
FAKIR
Shah Milan, came to be better known as Azan Fakir in
Assam because he motivated people to give Aazan, while reading the
Namaz. He is first Muslim preacher, who had come to Assam in the
early part of the 17th century. He learnt the Assamese language and
wrote 'Jikir' and 'Marsia' geet (songs) to preach his faith. He had
indeed enriched the culture and heritage of this land.
